I have lived in Utah most of my life and had never visited Horseshoe Bend until March 2015. I was working in Kanab, UT and decided to drive to Page, AZ after work to take pictures of Lake Powell. On the way, I saw signs for Horseshoe Bend and immediately decided to shoot this iconic location instead.

I was worried that I would not have enough time to actually hike to Horseshoe Bend before the sunset. However, I decided to risk it and followed the signs to the parking lot. I arrived in the parking lot which is surprisingly close to the highway about 20-25 minutes before the sun set. The hike was easy and only took about 10-15 minutes. Because this was a spontaneous trip, I had not researched any tips for photographing this location.

I had my Sigma 18-50 mm F/2.8 lens with me, but it was not wide enough to capture the landscape before me. Thus, I improvised and shot multiple pictures that I later stitched together in Photoshop CS4. I would recommend that anyone going to Horseshoe Bend have an 8mm or 11/12 mm lens to more adequately capture the grand scene before them. I arrived right at sunset and was able to capture multiple frames from multiple angles. I included tourists in some shots to give a sense of scale. Horseshoe Bend did not disappoint and I expect to go back another time, hopefully when there are more clouds in the sky.  Next time I will be prepared with a wider lens.

  1. I love the determination to get in the right spot at the right time. This is an excellent shot, and the way you captured the color of the red rocks is exceptional! My uncle does photography, and I have often helped him at different photo shoots, and so I can definitely appreciate good photography. Thanks for sharing!
